Your late summer Checklist ~What Every Senior Should Do This Month
Senior year has officially arrived!
Genuine excitement, mild dread, and the creeping suspicion that everyone else has this figured out already? September is, without question, the busiest stretch of the entire college process and most of the heavy lifting is happening NOW!
Make a plan and execute it methodically.
1) Finalize Your College List
If your list is still a loose assortment of "schools I've vaguely heard of," give it some structure. Aim for a thoughtful mix of Reach, Target, and Likely schools. Be ruthless about one rule! Every school should be somewhere you'd genuinely thrive, not merely somewhere that sounds impressive when your aunt asks at Thanksgiving.
Takeaway: A list of 8-10 schools you're truly enthusiastic about will always outperform a list of 15 you feel lukewarm about.
2) Your Essay (Yes, it’s essay time)
Nobody enjoys hearing "start your essay late summer," but consider the alternative. The students who begin early are never the ones frantically rewriting their personal statement at 11pm, hours before an Early Action deadline. Draft it, perfect it, and get feedback!
Supplemental Essays? Yup, you probably have some of those, too!
Takeaway: An imperfect first draft in summer will always beat a blank page in October.
3) Secure Your Recommendation Letters
Teachers are inundated with recommendation requests the moment fall arrives, and the student who asks early tends to receive noticeably more compelling letters. Choose two teachers who genuinely know you, not necessarily the ones who awarded the highest grade, and ask them this month, ideally in person. BUT, before asking, make sure that colleges on your list need them.
Takeaway: Early requests yield stronger letters. There's no way around it.
4) Sort Out Your Testing Plans
If you're taking (or retaking) the ACT or SAT, register now. Fall test seats fill quickly, and scores can take several weeks to arrive, a timeline that matters considerably if you're applying Early Action or Early Decision.
Takeaway: Lock in your test dates today. "Sometime soon" is not a plan.
5) Build a Deadline Tracker and Actually Consult It
Every school operates on its own timeline, and these timelines are anything but uniform. You have Early Action, Early Decision, Priority, Rolling, Regular Decision, plus scholarship-specific deadlines that frequently arrive earlier than the general application deadline. Consolidate every date into a single spreadsheet, a planner, your phone calendar or whatever you'll genuinely check. I have a great application planner…message me!
Takeaway: "I thought it was due later" remains the most preventable mistake.
6) And Parents, Begin Gathering Financial Aid Docs
FAFSA opens October 1st, but the families who avoid a frantic scramble on day one are the ones who spent time now assembling tax documents, income records, and a list of schools to send information to. A modest amount of preparation now spares you considerable stress later.
Takeaway: Be ready for FAFSA the instant it opens.
Senior year needn't feel like a race you're perpetually losing. Tackle one checklist item at a time, and you'll find yourself in excellent shape well before the real deadlines arrive. If you'd like help transforming any of this into an actual, executable plan with a college list, essays, deadlines, financial aid, that's precisely what I do!
